Assam Rifles

To win the hearts and minds of the citizens of the hill areas, the IGAR(S) and senior AR commanders successfully achieved in the form of Military Civil Activities (MCA) what the civil administration and dignitaries failed to do in 5 years period. Raised in 1835 as bi-purpose Army –trained forces by Col WL Shakespeare, the founding father of the Assam Rifles and its first DIGAR, to specifically look after the security and the general public interests of the NE India , the Assam Rifles has now 46 Battalions.
